Mistletoe Therapy in Washington and Oregon
Iscador and Helixor, prescribed and monitored.
Patients usually bring this one to me. They have read that mistletoe is routine supportive care across much of Europe and cannot understand why nobody here will discuss it.
I prescribe and monitor mistletoe therapy for patients in Washington and Oregon.
What it is
An extract of Viscum album, given by subcutaneous injection, usually two or three times a week. It has been used alongside conventional cancer treatment in Germany, Switzerland and Austria for decades. Iscador and Helixor are the preparations I work with most.
What the evidence supports
Quality of life, treatment tolerance and immune function during active treatment. That is where the human data is strongest, and it is a reasonable thing to want. Patients often report better appetite, better sleep and less fatigue through chemotherapy.
It is not a cancer cure and I will not present it as one. Trials looking at survival are mixed and smaller than they should be. What I can say is that for appropriate patients it is a meaningful adjunct to standard care with a mild side effect profile, and that it is worth trying if the goal is getting through treatment in better shape.
What a visit involves
I review your pathology, current treatment protocol and timing. Mistletoe is dosed by preparation, host tree and your own response, which is why it cannot be self-directed. We start low. A local inflammatory reaction at the injection site is expected and is part of how we titrate. I teach you or a family member to inject, and we recheck in four to six weeks.
You will need to tell your oncology team you are doing this. Most are neutral once they understand the evidence base. I am glad to write to them directly.
What people ask me first
Whether it interferes with chemotherapy, radiation or immunotherapy. Whether it can be given during a treatment break. Whether insurance covers it, which it does not. What the injection actually feels like. Whether the host tree matters, which it does. We work through all of it before you commit to anything.
Cost
Initial consultation is $350 for 60 minutes. Follow-ups start at $120. Visits are self-pay and I do not bill insurance. The mistletoe itself is a separate pharmacy cost.
